Scott Hamilton & Scandinavian Five: Live at Nefertiti (2010)

Scott Hamilton is a straight-ahead tenor saxophonist with a big tone, influenced by greats like Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and Ben Webster, yet with a very personal sound. This 2007 concert was recorded and videotaped for this combined CD/DVD release by the Danish label Stunt. Joining Hamilton at the Jazzclub Nefertiti in Gothenberg, Sweden are pianist Jan Lundgren, guitarist Ulf Wakenius, bassist Jesper Bodilsen, and drummer Kristian Leth. An obvious highlight is the driving rendition of the bop vehicle "Move," with several explosive solos, along with the lush, lyrical setting of "In a Sentimental Mood." The quintet's performance of Blue Mitchell's toe-tapping "Blue Capers" revisits a piece that has been somewhat overlooked. Bonus tracks on the DVD include a brilliant solo performance by Ulf Wakenius that combines "Smile" and "Nuages" (though the latter tune is not listed) and interviews with the musicians. Although the lighting is a little dark on the stage at times, the photography, editing, and audio are all excellent. Highly recommended.~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
